About Utah
Do I need to bring ID?
Why do you scan my ID and medical card?
We scan your ID and medical cannabis card to verify your identity and ensure purchases comply with Utah Department of Health & Human Services (DHHS) regulations. Information is used solely for compliance and tracking purposes — we do not sell or share your personal data.
Who can buy medical cannabis in Utah?
Only patients with an active Utah Medical Cannabis Card (MCC) may purchase products.
• You must be at least 18 years old, or have a legal guardian registered as your caregiver.
• Caregivers and guardians must also hold valid DHHS-issued cards.
• Recreational (adult-use) cannabis sales are not legal in Utah.
Can I use a medical card from another state?
Out-of-state cards are not accepted for regular purchases. However, non-Utah residents with qualifying medical conditions may apply for a temporary medical cannabis card, valid for up to 21 days, through the DHHS online system.
How much cannabis can I buy at one time?
Purchases are limited to a 28-day supply as determined by your qualified medical provider and verified by the state tracking system. Dispensaries must adhere to whichever amount is lower — the provider recommendation or the state limit.
What forms of cannabis are allowed?
Utah law permits the following approved forms:
• Tablet, capsule, or concentrated oil
• Liquid or sublingual tincture
• Transdermal patch, lotion, or topical cream
• Vaping of unprocessed cannabis flower in pre-filled cartridges (smoking is prohibited)
• Wax, resin, or other concentrate forms approved by DHHS
• Gelatinous cubes and confections
• Suppositories
Not allowed:
• Combustible (smoked) flower
• Edibles such as baked goods, candies, or chocolates
Can I consume cannabis in public?
No. Utah law prohibits the consumption of medical cannabis in any public place, in a motor vehicle, or on federal property. Consumption must take place in private residences or other lawful private settings.
Can I drive after using cannabis?
No. Driving under the influence of THC or any impairing substance is illegal. Patients must wait until they are no longer impaired before operating a vehicle or machinery.
What are the storage and transport rules?
Keep all products sealed in original packaging when transporting.
• Store products securely and out of reach of children or pets.
• Never cross state lines with cannabis — this violates federal law.
• Keep your receipt and label with your item when transporting
How is cannabis tracked in Utah?
All medical cannabis products are tracked through the Utah Electronic Verification System (EVS).Pharmacies verify patient limits and purchase history in real time to prevent over-purchasing.
Are there purchase taxes or fees?
There are no special excise taxes like recreational states, but card renewal and application fees may apply through DHHS.
Utah charges a $1.50 transaction fee per transaction. There are no state sales taxes except on devices.
What should I do if I lose my card or have issues logging in?
Visit medicalcannabis.utah.gov to access the Electronic Verification System (EVS) and request a replacement or reset. Pharmacies cannot override the system or process sales without an active card.
Can I share or sell my medical cannabis?
No. It is illegal to transfer or sell medical cannabis to another person, even another cardholder. All products are for personal medical use only.

About Cannabis
What is the difference between THC and CBD?
THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) is the primary psychoactive compound in cannabis and is responsible for producing intoxicating or euphoric effects. CBD (cannabidiol) is non?intoxicating and is often associated with mild calming effects. Products may contain THC, CBD, or a combination of both. Effects vary by individual.
How do THC and CBD products differ in effects?
THC dominant products may produce stronger euphoric or psychoactive effects. CBD dominant or balanced products may feel milder and are often chosen for a more subtle experience. Always start with a low dose, especially if you are new to cannabis.
What are terpenes?
Terpenes are natural aromatic compounds found in cannabis and other plants. They contribute to the scent, flavor, and potential experience of a product.
Do terpenes affect how cannabis feels?
Terpenes may influence how cannabis products feel for some users. For example, some terpenes are commonly associated with relaxing experiences, while others are linked to more uplifting sessions. Individual experiences vary, and research is ongoing.
What are some common terpenes?
Examples include:
• Myrcene — commonly associated with earthy or herbal aromas
• Limonene — citrus aroma, often linked with an uplifting experience
• Pinene — pine aroma, associated with alertness for some users
• Linalool — floral aroma, often associated with calming effects
Terpene presence varies by product and strain.
Do terpenes guarantee effects?
No. Terpenes do not guarantee a specific effect. Everyone’s response to cannabis is different. Use terpene information as a general guide and adjust based on personal experience.
